Simpe Past and the Past Progressive

Simple Past:

A dog jumped in front of my car.
The action happened in the past (began and finished at a time in the past).

Past Progressive (also called "Past Continuous"):

While I was driving, a dog jumped in front of my car.
The action was in progress (was happening) at a time in the past.
